LensKart, American Swan apologize for earthquake-related promotions

The famous and largest E-commerce companies Lenskart and American Swan have apologized for their recent promotional messages that were pegged on the Nepal earthquake that killed nearly 2,000 people.

Couple of hours after the tragic earthquake hit Nepal on Saturday, Lenskart sent out a promotional message “Shake it off like this Earthquake” and American Swan’s ad read, “Whooaaa! This is an Earth Shattering offer”.

This immediately led to backlash on social media for insensitive behaviour, forcing both Lenskart and American Swan to apologise.

Since pricing and discounting have emerged as the biggest differentiators driving customers to shop online, Indian online firms offer promotions almost daily.

“We sincerely hope that you will be able to forgive our lapse,” Peyush Bansal and Amit Chaudhary, Lenskart cofounders, said in a blog post on Saturday evening. AmericanSwan, also sent messages apologising for its lapse in judgement while issuing messages. The earthquake epic entered in Nepal killed more than 2,000 in the Himalayan nation and greater than 50 people in eastern and northern parts of India.

Founded in 2011, Delhi based Lenskart is backed by investors including Ronnie Screwvala-led Unilazer Ventures, TPG Growth, IDG Ventures, and TR Capital.

American Swan has received funding of Rs 40 crore from Four Cross Media.
